85, Antwerp, study of courtyard entrance to the Steen

Larger Image

Inscribed ‘TRANSOM/JAMB’, pencil, 230x160mm.

This Renaissance portal with gothic features is the courtyard entrance at the Steen. It was part of the work carried out by Domien de Waghemakere (1460-1542) in the 1520s under the Emperor Charles V.

Mackintosh has included a profile of the door jamb (bottom right); but at bottom left he has sketched a side door in the courtyard, indicating a profile of the transom common to several of the castle’s doors and windows.
