One study inscribed ‘MANTUA’, pencil, 230x160mm.

Mackintosh visited Mantua on 14 June 1891. Despite the fact that the town contains two churches by Leon Battista Alberti, including his masterpiece, Sant’Andrea and Giulio Romano’s Palazzo del Te, he recorded in his diary that he ‘went all over the town and then all the churches but found nothing of interest’.
