The church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands in the Piazza del Duomo immediately behind the Broletto. Mackintosh’s uncomplimentary 17 June diary entry regarded the exterior as ‘early and crude’. It was begun by a Maestro Fredo in 1137. The drawing of the eastern end, from the direction of Via Gaetano Donizetti, indicates how Mackintosh responded to the picturesque massing of the building, with its early Renaissance New Sacristy (1485-91) at street level, and the main Romanesque body of the church rising above.
