24, Lake Como, studies of churches, landscape and a boat
Inscribed ‘BELLANO’ ‘GRAVENDONA’[sic] ‘SHADOW OF A CLOUD’, pencil, 230x160mm.
Bellano (top left) is on the east shore of Lake Como. The unidentified church is still clearly visible from the Lake.
The unidentified campanile (top right) is in Gravedona on the north western bank of Lake Como. It is also visible from the Lake.
Right centre is Mackintosh’s drawing of the tower of Santa Maria del Tiglio (twelfth century) at Gravedona. The tower is built of bands of white marble and black limestone, square in its lower storeys, octagonal above.
The view across the lake (bottom) is unidentified.
Mackintosh could have made these drawings on 18 June when he made a trip along Lake Como, part of which, from Colico on the north east bank, south to Cadenabbia on the western bank, would have been by steamer ('Diary' 18 June).
