Inscribed ‘S. ZENONE VERONA /CARVING FROM STALLS’, pencil, 230x160mm.

Mackintosh’s drawing shows three examples of the elaborately carved arm-rests on the 15th century, early Renaissance, wooden choir stalls which display much late gothic feeling. He was particularly impressed by the stalls, describing them as ‘exquisite’ ('A Tour In Italy', p. 124). He used them as a source for those in his 'Design for a Chapter House', entered for the R.I.B.A. Soane Medallion Competition of 1892.
