18, Verona, Santa Maria in Organo, bell tower
Inscribed ‘CAMPANILE/S. MARIA IN ORGANO/VERONA’ with other notes in pencil, 230x160mm.
Santa Maria in Organo, dating from the seventh century, was rebuilt by the Olivetan order after an earthquake in 1117, with a white marble façade designed by Michele Sanmicheli in 1481. The campanile, completed in 1533, is believed to be the work of Fra Giovanni da Verona (c. 1457-1525) who was responsible for the church’s interior woodwork which Mackintosh also drew.
